Merkel at odds with Cameron over Juncker's candidacy for EC president

FXStreet (Barcelona) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with British PM David Cameron, Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt and Dutch PM Mark Rutte in Sweden in order to discuss the current economic situation in the EU, UK's EU membership, as well as Jean-Claude Juncker's nomination for the president of the European Commission.

During the press conference following their talks Angela Merkel stressed that EU growth was still fragile and that the EU member States should agree on an agenda to boost growth and competitiveness in the area.

David Cameron spoke about UK's willingness to remain part of a reformed Europe, stressing however that he wouldn't want to see it going in the wrong direction. The British PM is opposed to Juncker's candidacy for the president of the European Commission and to the European Parliament deciding who should take the post, as he says it's a violation of EU treaties according to which the choice should be made by European leaders.

Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt and Dutch PM Mark Rutte support Cameron's stance in this respect and push for redefining the European Commission's priorities before electing a president. Meanwhile, Angela Merkel has reiterated her support for Juncker's candidacy, but might be willing to discuss other options.

The nomination of the candidate chosen to replace Jose Manuel Barroso as head of the European Commission will be announced at the EU summit on 26-27 June.
